Purchasing TheMagic5 Goggles is a new journey itself. You go to TheMagic5 website

Ordering a custom pair of TheMagic5 goggles starts with a few simple steps. The process is straightforward, but it’s unlike any other goggle purchase I’ve made before.

Step 1 – The Purchase Journey

Start by going to TheMagic5 website to shop for your best swimming goggles. The site invites you to choose from an array of lens options, including:

• Blue mirrored
• Blue tint
• Black mirrored
• Black smoke
• Pink mirrored
• Pink gold

You find the color that you like best and purchase it through their online shopping cart. After you complete the purchase, you’ll be presented with an order ID number. This order ID number is what you’ll put into the Magic5 phone app.

Step 2 – Face Scanning and Order Linking

Once I completed my order, I needed to scan my face and then link that data to my order. This is done through the Magic5 phone app.

Here’s how it happens:

1. Download TheMagic5 app.
2. Create an account and follow the prompts to scan your face from multiple angles.
3. The face scan meticulously measures your eye length, size, nose bridge width, eye socket, and facial contours to create a pair of goggles that fits perfectly.

Comfort and Fit

TheMagic5’s soft silicone gaskets are unique, in that they do not have a flange to keep out water. They are built to conform to your face without creating unwanted pressure points or squeezing your eyes—a common issue with traditional goggles. You don’t have to strap the goggles on as tight as other goggles either. They feel good.

The dual straps are long and stretchy, offering ample room for adjustments, even if it means you might need to trim the excess. The straps are pretty thin and provide an easy fit. Adjusting the straps the first time requires a little bit of a struggle, but you know they won’t come loose once you have the right length.

Real-World Testing of TheMagic5 Goggles

It’s time to test these goggle out and see how they compare to the AquaSpere Kayenne Pro swim goggles I normally wear.

Even with very little pressure, the goggles clung to my face like they were made to be there—no leaks, no fogging, no adjustments needed mid-lap. Even after rigorous flip turns and dives, the goggles stayed put, proving that the face scan technology is more than just a gimmick.

It felt strange to be wearing goggles that fit “inside” my eye socket, as the Kayenne Pro goggles fit outside, which I find very comfortable. It felt like it kept putting slight pressure on the top of my eyeball. Not sure if that is normal or not.

Did I get a 5% edge by wearing these over my normal swimming goggles? That’s hard to say. I may have to use them more to actually determine that. Right now, I”m still getting used to how they fit, which is quite different for me. Time will tell though.

One thing that I think is important to note – These are the only goggles that I’ve ever used where I did not have any eye rings after my swim. No marks at all. I think that is due to the custom fit and less pressure needed to keep them on your face.

I only have the blue magic mirror gold color, which are for mid-sunny days. If I was going to be swimming in open water during very sunny conditions, I’d probably opt for a darker shade, which is available from the Magic5 website.

Pros and Cons

TheMagic5 goggles score high on comfort, but they’re not without their drawbacks. While they start strong with a snug fit and clear vision, for long swims I just couldn’t get totally comfortable with how they sit inside my eye socket. Perhaps this will change over time, since I’ve used the same type of goggles for close to a decade now.

TheMagic5 Goggles: Worth the Investment?

I have tried many goggles that sit inside vs over the eye socket. I really want to like them since they offer a more streamlined approach in the water. Ultimately, you’ll go faster when you’re more streamlined, right?

TheMagic5 goggles are the best “inside” goggles that I’ve tried. But I still find them strange feeling, especially during long swims.

TheMagic5 goggles sit at a higher price point than your run-of-the-mill swimming goggles, which generally hover around $30. This begs the question: do they deliver enough to justify the cost?

For me, I think I’d definitely use these in a short-course swim where every second counts. They look awesome, and would easily be marginally faster. But for a long course, I would prioritize comfort over seconds. It’s a personal decision, but having goggles outside the eye socket is just more comfortable for me.

I also tend to purchase new goggles every other month when I’m swimming a lot. $70 is double what I normally pay. There are discounts when you purchase more than one in a bundle, but it still ends up being more than my everyday goggles.

However, I have no problem recommending these to swimmers who are looking for a leak-free, fog-free solution that looks great. Goggles are very personal, so I would say give TheMagic5 goggles at least one try.

Update!!

I reached out to customer service and one of the co-founders replied back to me. He suggested that I loosen the straps a bit because with the custom fit the goggles don’t need as much pressure to be watertight. I did this and voila! It was like a different set of goggles and way more comfortable.

It almost feels too loose, but they work great and don’t leave my eyes with pressure marks. I’m a little embarrassed that it was this easy, but even after 20 years, I’m learning new things. I’m a believer now – these goggles are really quite different from anything else I’ve worn. They are extremely comfortable and look great.
