Early Life and Athletic Beginnings
Kristian Blummenfelt was born in Bergen, Norway.
Kristian’s athletic life began in swimming but he prospered as a cross-country runner while a teenager and competed in the 2011 European Cross Country Championships as a junior. Transitioning to triathlon was fairly easy with this multi-sport background.
He won many of the races he entered while competing in various ITU Junior European Cup events.
In 2015, as a Senior, he scored his first major ITU placing by picking up a bronze at the European Championship.
Kristian was competing mostly in the ITU World Triathlon Series (Now the World Triathlon Championship Series).
He was the Norwegian National Champion in 2015, 2016, and 2018.
Blummenfelt competed in the ITU/WTS races mostly, but in 2017, entered Ironman 70.3 Bahrain (Ironman 70.3 Middle East Championships) and won the race.
He went on to win that race in 2018, and 2019 as well.
It’s worth noting that Kristian was getting second place in many WTS races, but couldn’t quite break through for a win. This changed in 2019 when Kristian won WTS Lausanne.
While 2020 was canceled mostly due to COVID-19, Kristian came back in 2021 with a vengeance.
Breakthrough Year
Kristian’s talent was on full display in 2021. He began by winning WTCS Yokohama. He then went to the Olympics and won gold. He followed that up with a win at WTCS Edmonton.
In November 2021, he entered Ironman Cozumel and won as a first time competitor at the distance.
He was showing everyone that he could win at any distance. From short course racing to a full Ironman, he was a threat.
Olympic Games
Kristian has participated in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games (held in 2021 due to COVID-19).

It’s noteworthy to mention that Blummenfelt got as much attention in the 2020 Olympic Games for his white triathlon kit (which became see-through when wet) as for his gold medal.
